Self Storage Security

When it comes to picking out a self storage facility security is a major factor. All modern storage facilities should have a security system and should include video surveillance. A good video surveillance system should be run on a DVR. There should be cameras covering entrances & exits, ideally you would want more coverage. Your lock used to secure your unit should not be forgotten. Below is a list of different style locks and their security rating.

Pad Lock - "Minimum Security"
+ Basically a deterrent, a set of bolt cutters from a hardware store can bypass these.

Disc Locks - "Medium Security"
+ Disc locks usually can’t be bolt cut, they must be grinded or drilled out. Drill bits are available to open these locks within seconds.

Cylinder Locks - "Maximum Security"
+ The storage facility must be setup to use these. They cannot be bolt cut or grinded. These can only be bypassed by special drill bits.

These locks can be bought at the self storage facility. Usually they cost the same as they do in other stores; try to stay away from non-brand name locks, yes they are cheaper but less secure. Going over our Self Storage Shopping guide is a great idea before renting a storage unit.

You must always remember, if someone wants your stuff, they can most likely get it. Make sure not to tell everyone what and where you’re storing. Watch for people hanging around or watching the facility, if you notice this contact the police. Most thieves will not go through multiple lockers; they usually hit one they know the contents of. You should always get insurance on your storage unit. You can read about insurance in our Self Storage Insurance section.

Do not store money, expensive jewelry, confidential documents, etc in your storage unit. Keep all these items in a safe deposit box, or in another location. After storing your goods make sure to check in on the stuff from time to time, usually once a week is fine. Finding missing or stolen items a month after it happened hampers the recovering and claim effort. Remember when renting storage, rent secure storage!
