How to Choose the Right Self Storage Facility
Shopping for self storage is like shopping for a car, there are so many different options and prices to choose from. Like
shopping for a car the cheapest storage unit isn’t always the best. If you’re storing useless items that have no value then
the cheapest storage unit would be sufficient. If you are storing all your household belongings or items of value then
usually the cheapest facility will not do. This section of the Self Storage Guide website will help you choose the best
self storage facility for your needs.
There are 3 basic things your looking for when you shop for a self storage unit, they are service, cleanliness
and price. When shopping for self storage you’ll want to call all the facilities first. Usually you can use the
internet or the phone book to find storage facilities closest to you, or you can try our
Self Storage Search. You’ll want to start off
by making a list of 7 to 10 self storage facilities closest to your location or location you’re moving to. Make sure to
also collect those facilities names, numbers and addresses.
Now that you have built your list it is time to start pricing these facilities. You should already have an idea of what
storage unit size you need; if you don’t please view our
Self Storage Sizes section to get an idea what sizes you might need. It’s a good idea to get the price of the unit
smaller and larger than the size you think you need as well. Make sure you do not give out your name and number
during your initial pricing calls. They will attempt to follow up on you and it can get rather annoying, remember it's their
job to sell you their self storage unit.
Once you have gotten your prices, its time to pick 3 to 4 of the storage facilities with the prices in your affordable
range. Remember, the cheapest facilities is NOT always the best. You are now going to physically visit these
locations yourself, do not make any unit reservations or agreements over the phone till you have viewed all the locations,
you usually have to leave a deposit that is non-refundable.
The next page of this guide will explain what questions you should ask, and what answers to look for. What to look for as
you walk around the facility. Then finally how to select the best facility to use based on your observations.
